The Birdman Visit!

11th Mar 2022

On Thursday we were delighted to welcome back Ian Patterson, the Birdman, to St. Mary's Cabragh. Ian has been a regular visitor to St. Mary's over the past twenty years.

Ian brought along 'Talba', the Barn Owl, 'Fluffy' the Wood Owl, 'Bill' the Kestrel and 'Jamie' the Hawk.

The children enjoyed finding out some very interesting facts about Birds of Prey.

Talba the Barn Owl is three years old and he is named after his back toe 'talon' and 'alba' which means white in latin. Talba the Barn Owl has the most beautiful white face!

'Fluffy' the Wood Owl is 12 years old and the children learned that wood owls like Fluffy can be seen in our local Parkanaur Forest.

'Bill' the Kestrel is 17 years old and Ian explained that unlike Talba the Barn Owl, the Kestrel is not nocturnal and hunts during the day.

'Jamie' the Hawk is 22 years old and the children learned that Jamie eats twice as much food as Talba, Bill and Fluffy.

The children asked Ian some very good questions about Birds of Prey and many of the children and staff got the opportunity to hold the amazing birds !
