Sue Wright Visits St Mary’s

27th Oct 2022

On Tuesday, we welcomed Sue to St Mary’s to speak to the children about keeping safe at Halloween.

Children love the magic of Halloween, but  Sue gave the boys and girls lots of tips to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holiday.

Sue reminded the children to keep the following tips in mind when out on Halloween night:

  • Make sure that costumes, wigs and accessories are fire -resistant. Halloween costumes should be kept well away from naked flames and other heat sources at all times!
  • When out at night, wear reflective clothing or add reflective tape to  costumes.A bright-coloured costume will make you more visible at night.
  • Make sure that an adult accompanies young children trick or treating.
  • Never enter a stranger's home or car.
  • Older children should only trick or treat in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends
  • Hold sparklers at arm's length while being lit and light them one at a time. Don't wave sparklers about close to other people.Make sure everyone handling sparklers wears gloves.
  • Sparklers burn hot and school aged children should always be supervised by an adult when using them. One useful tip is to place sparklers in carrots first which has the effect of giving the sparklers a much better handle that’s easier to grip. It also keeps the hot part further away from childrens’ hands.
  • When you're watching firework displays, stand well back from any firework that has been lit, even if it has not gone off.
  • Stand far back at a safe distance from bonfires.
  • Children should never help an adult light a bonfire. Bonfires can be unpredictable and extremely dangerous therefore a child should never assist in lighting, even if the bonfire is small.

Wishing everyone a very happy, safe and Spooktacular Halloween!
