We have been incorporating STEM challenges into our learning in P5.
As part of our Raiders and Traders topic in World Around Us, we learned about Viking longships and floating and sinking. We were set a STEM challenge to create a boat out of tinfoil. Each team was given a square of tinfoil and asked to make a boat that would float in water. We then added cube 'people' to our boats and counted how many we could add before the boat sank. After testing we were able to evaluate which designs worked best.
Meanwhile, as part of our 3D shape topic in Numeracy, P5 were asked to construct different 3D shapes using only lollipop sticks and blutak. We developed our problem-solving skills and also became better team players working with different people in our groups.
