Sensory Garden Project

18th May 2023

Our Eco- Council and Gardening Club, led by Mr McErlean, have been hard at work designing a Sensory Garden for the pupils in St Mary’s.

We would like to thank our ‘Friends of Cabragh’, parent support group and Mr Mc Erlean who have been instrumental in securing funding to purchase the polytunnel, develop the Sensory Garden area and help this project become a reality.

A special thank you also to Mr Ryan Cunningham, Mr Seamus O’Neill and Mr Damien Hamill for giving so generously of their time and for helping to develop the Sensory Garden.

This project has been thoroughly planned with an immense collaborative effort from all the pupils and volunteers to utilise the unused space at the school and transform it into a beautiful, therapeutic and tranquil space.

During Term 1, Sammy from the Donaghmore Horticultural Community kindly visited St Mary’s and spoke with our Eco-Council members about their plans for the new polytunnel and Sensory Garden.

He very kindly passed on lots of useful tips and advice which will greatly benefit our Eco-Council when working on improving our school’s biodiversity.

Our Eco Council were keen to ask lots of questions to make sure we had everything we needed to help our environment thrive. They put forward great ideas on how the polytunnel and Sensory Garden could be developed, including growing fruit, vegetables and herbs.

The students, volunteer parents and staff involved are enjoying nurturing the garden, sharing ideas, making new friends, and getting out and active in the fresh air - all of which can have a positive impact on physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Our Eco-Council and Gardening Club are now celebrating the fruits of their labour! Our Eco-Council were delighted to pay a visit to Glenview Nursing Home to deliver some of our homegrown produce. They delivered some freshly harvested vegetables and flowers from our poly tunnel. We look forward to delivering some more fresh produce in the not-too-distant future!

Our Sensory Garden project is now nearing completion and we look forward to unveiling the final results at a special opening ceremony next month.

This amazing project has highlighted the effective liaison between the school and the wider community. The Sensory Garden is an important addition to St Mary’s and we are very grateful to everyone who helped and supported the idea! This amazing space, will be used and enjoyed by all our children and school community for many years to come!

Keep an eye on our social media over the coming weeks as we unveil the final results of our Sensory Garden project!
