Feel Good Friday- World Maths Day Challenge

The theme of last week's Feel Good Friday Virtual Assembly was World Maths Day. World Maths Day aims to get children excited and enthusiastic about learning Maths! There was certainly lots of excitement last week when all the children went on a number hunt!

As part of our World Maths Day celebrations, Miss Scullion set the children a Feel Good Friday challenge!

The children were encouraged to look around and search for numbers in the real world. The children were asked to send in a photo of their number, from 1 - 100, to their class teacher on Google Classroom. The challenge was to see how much of the 100 square, we as a school could fill with real life pictures.

The response to the challenge was fantastic! The children had lots of fun searching for numbers and sending them into school. We would like to congratulate all the children for achieving the school's target of filling the 100 square with real life pictures of numbers!

Last week, the children in St. Mary's also took part in lots of fun, active and engaging maths activities to celebrate World Maths Day. Please see the videos and pictures below showcasing the brilliant work completed by the children at St. Mary's!

Primary 1

 

Primary 2

Primary 2 enjoyed getting involved with World Maths Week this week.

For this challenge, Primary 2 focused on the topic of “Measure”. They explored Capacity and also used Non Standard Units of Measure to measure Length and Height.

They took part in a carousel style activity which allowed them to get involved in independent, paired and group work.

Station 1- Capacity Station.
At this station the children worked in pairs to carefully fill the soil to each Capacity level. They developed the language associated with Capacity such as: empty, nearly empty, half full, nearly full and full. They also worked in pairs to order the cups from empty to full.

Station 2- Measuring Height.
At this station the children had to work independently to estimate, measure and record the height of the flower using a range of objects. We know that estimate means to make a really good guess.

Station 3- Measuring Length
The children had to work in pairs to estimate, measure and record the length of the Giant’s footprint using a range of objects. They were very good at sharing, taking turns and helping their partners at this station.

Station 4- ICT
At this station the children had to work as a group to read the sentence and then select the correct animal. This activity focused on long/short and tall/small objects. They developed their teamwork skills of listening to others, taking turns, sharing and helping one another.

Station 5- The Giant’s Feet
This station proved to be the most popular!
The children had to put on the Giant’s feet and estimate how many steps it would take them to get to the end of the corridor.
A few tumbles and laughs later, and the children were able to make their way from one side of the corridor to another.

P4 Maths Week Tasks

Our amazing P4 children have been discovering the meaning of symmetry.

Folding paper shapes gave children experience of recognising that symmetry happens when 2 sides are mirror images of one another.

That this fold line is called a LINE OF SYMMETRY.

The children took part in a scavenger hunt around their homes and gardens and discovered that symmetry can be found in designs of buildings, household appliances, furniture, fabrics,toys and clothing.

A lot of fun was had and as part of this ’symmetry hunt’ children realised that when an object or design has symmetry it looks nice and we are able to copy the design and create a repeating pattern.

Children discovered that repeat patterns can be found in wall coverings, carpet, Lego, baking tins, window blinds and so much more.

Pictures which had a single line of symmetry were used to challenge the children’s problem solving skills. They had to balance the drawings in terms of space, curves, positioning and detail.

Completing a colour block sheet involved children working from the line of symmetry.  Skills and procedure included noting the position and colour of each tile, and then locating and placing a similar colour on the blank side, to complete a symmetrical display.

Lots of hard work is evident from the many tasks on display.

Primary 5

This week the boys and girls in Primary 5 have been celebrating World Maths Day with activities across the week. Each day there was a different practical maths challenge assigned and the pupils' produced amazing results in their investigations and practical learning. A snapshot of their work and the nature of the activities are outlined below and in the short video attached.

  • 'Shape Hunt' - a 2D and 3D shape hunt inside and outside of their house, recording their data into a table.
  • 'What's the length?' - estimating and measuring the length and perimeter of different objects at home.
  • 'How much?' - In the kitchen baking delicious meals and treats, P5 were measuring their ingredients and recording their method for baking. 
  • 'Angles in Nature' - using a right-angle checker, P5 proved that obtuse, acute, and right angles all exist in nature.

  Fantastic work from all the pupils in Primary 5, as easy as 1, 2, 3!

 

Primary 6

 
 

This week P6 participated in a variety of maths challenges. The P6 boys and girls had to combine their mathematical and problem-solving skills to complete all the challenges 😊
Some of the challenges included:

 *   A shape hunt.
 *   Measuring ingredients.
 *   Estimating and calculating the area and perimeter of their bed.
 *   Maths brain teasers and puzzles.
 *   Completing exercise movements in a period of time/ using timers.
 *   Converting 12-hour times to 24 hour.
 *   Finding household items with a particular capacity.
 *   Measuring their height and finding items that would equal their height.

Primary 7

 

Primary 7 enthusiastically took part in World Maths Week from home this year. There was a lot of creativity shown throughout the week with what they produced.

Day 1:

We had to choose one of the four provinces of Ireland. Write a list of the counties in that province. Then, count how many counties touch/border that county. We first had to produce a table of our results. Then, show this on a pictogram or bar chart made from household objects. We needed to make sure to include all the parts of the specific graph too.

Day 2:

Probability. If you roll a fair, 6-sided die, there is an equal probability that the die will land on any given side. (1/6 chance), Of course, you could roll three 6s in a row, or you could roll a die six times and not land on a 2. But, the more times you carry out the die rolling the more the numbers should even out to get us to our 1/6 chance. We tested this theory by each rolling a die 300 times and tallying up the scores for each number. Some of us got scores close to 1/6, others didn’t. When all the scores were added together and ‘the percentage chances’ were recorded, they were much more accurate again. We discovered that the more times you do the test, the more accurate a chance of landing on each number will be 1/6.

Day 3:

Today, our task was to create a maths game. We had to decide the type of maths game - it could have been any aspect of maths. We also had to pick the age range for the game and write a simple set of rules for our game. Some fantastic games were created. We even took some time to play with our families at home.

Day 4:

We were given a few STEM based challenges. We could choose the challenge. It involved predicting, measuring and finding the actual results. We had lots of fun being creative in this task.

Day 5:

We loved playing LIVE Mathletics against our classmates today. Usually, we like to play live Mathletics against children in other schools, but it was nice to play against each other from home today.

Extra games:

We enjoyed playing some mental maths games and riddles this week too. We learnt how to play 24, where you must make the number 24 using all four given numbers and any of the maths operations. We spent some time playing ‘countdown maths’ too and finished off the week with a few maths riddles to answer.
